Body Assessment #13: Shari
September 2, 2008 by Valerie Waters
# Your name Shari
# Your age 50
# Your goals To lose 30 lbs of fat by Dec 31, 2008. To wear a size 10 by Dec 31, 2008, To be 25% body fat by Dec 31, 2008.
# Your exercise/diet history I have done every diet known to man. I lost on some of them, others no luck.
I have been researching nutrition and fat loss for about 2 years. I know that dieting doesn’t work and I need to adjust my nutrition to fit my life and my goals. I have been weightlifting and walking on and off for the last 2 years. I actually lost 25 lbs last year and have kept off most of it, but I’m up about 10. I am 50 years old and am going thru menopause. It really has thrown my body into a tailspin. It feels like the fat just won’t come off. I keep trying, I am never gonna quit. I need to get myself in shape before I start having health issues due to age and weight.
# Anything else you feel I should know! I am 5′2″, 200 lbs. I have been tracking my body fat with an Accumeasure caliper. I am at 38%–that could be off one way or the other, but I have seen a downward trend up until about 2 months ago. I have been gaining a bit again. I need you to know that I need your help! I want to be an inspiration to all women. I want to show them what they can do–no matter age, or physical condition. I have been keeping track of my progress with a blog. You can view it here: http://becomefitatfifty.com

Hey Shari! Wow, you sound determined and ready to go for it–good for you! That’s a great first step in making it happen for yourself. And Val, thanks for stating the ‘need’ to stick with the workout..so many people miss a workout here and there and it just keeps getting easier and easier to ‘miss’ even more. Shari, I’ll be checkout out your blog and I hope you’ll keep your workouts and diet posted–I love reading about what other people do to make it all work for them. Good Luck and stay with it!
I loved this assessment. So much of it applied to my own personal situation. It was just what I needed to hear to get my train back on the track. Thanks so much Valerie, and keep up the good work Shari!
“It’s gotta be on” Love that. It’s where I fall off too. I go so consistently and then get sidetracked, and that’s not the way to stay in optimal shape.
The cool thing with RCR has been that I’ve been able to be completely consistent with it (I’m in week 4) because it’s actually enjoyable exercise. And I almost never use “exercise” and “enjoyable” in the same sentence.
I bookmarked your blog, Shari!
Shari- thank you for taking so much time to introduce yourself to Val and us! I think it’s awesome how thoroughly you’ve gone about this process. I’m with Val- “it’s gotta be on”!!!! You hold the power to do this for yourself and you will succeed! I will enjoy following your progress- keep at it!
Hi Shari,
Now that Labor Day has passed we are in the back to school/back on the program feeling. For trainers this time of the year rivals New Year’s for commitment. Take advantage of it to get some momentum before the holidays. You seem really ready to hit your goal. Don’t back down. Stay with it. You are going to do it.
Hey Shari.. 50 is the new 30 that is the good news, the great news is you are willing to make a plan to meet your goals.
Just from the medical aspect though, have you had your thyroid checked? I mean you are doing so great and then you said you have been gaining despite the workouts? I am just wondering as I was giving this some thought.
Menopause can be as bad as just having a period.. Your cravings will be the same but the hot flashes become worse.
Homeopathically, if these are bothersome things for you, you can try black cohosh and then soy (it can be found at any drugstore, and sometimes the dollar store!!).
I have also bookmarked your blog.. What a great way to hold yourself accountable, I have been considering that myself. Started one and then was hoping we would see that here at RCR where we can have our own blog space. Who knows!!!
I will certainly join the other RCR ladies in cheering you on..
I have been with the plan for going on 4 weeks. I am pleased so far and hope that Val will be able to post the new pictures when the time is right..
I am going on to the second phase and I am still intending on reaching my goals by that 6th week.

ps.. one of my favorite motivational sayings is by Joan Collins:
“Show me a person who has never made a mistake and I’ll show you someone who has never achieved much.”
Just a bit to keep you going
Laura,
That was a really great post and helpful information. Thank you.

Hi Shari -
I totally admire your determination and resolve to make these life changes. I am forwarding your blog to my mom so that you can be an inspiration to her too.
Good Luck and keep up the good work!

HI Shari!
You are going to do it. RCR is SOOOO do-able and you’ll drop the weight on the scale easier using the light weights - when I did really heavy ones, the scale wouldn’t budge, which doesn’t help psychologically!
Truly get ya about the perimenopause thing…have you started crying at stoplights yet? That started 2 weeks ago with me! Retaining water, ugh…..
We’ll all hang in with you - and it helps me to think of putting nourishing things in my mouth rather than restricting other things….
You will do it, you sound soooo ready!
Blessings,
Michelle
